Ira: The life and times of a princess

Harper Collins Publishing

Ira: The life and times of a princess, by Nicholas Foulkes, published by Harper Collins, is an unusually frank insight into the higher echelons of European society.

TwoSheds were commissioned to create a stunningly lavish book design to accompany the biographical narrative of Princess Ira von Fürstenberg. A journey that takes the reader from disintegrated aristocratic Europe post World War through to the flamboyant days of the early 1970s jet set. Muse to master photographers including Irving Penn, Cecil Beaton and Helmut Newton, actress alongside Klaus Kinski and Anthony Quinn, and model for Diana Vreeland’s Vogue, Princess Ira von Fürstenberg has lived her life in the spotlight.

The cover portrait, by Irving Penn, is overprinted onto the cloth cover of this case bound book. The cover, spine and slipcase have the title gold foil blocked into the cloth. The design layout opens with typographic pages which subsequently lets the imagery breathe on the page alongside the running text with touches of typographic detail printed in a warm metallic ink adding a gilt to the design. Section dividers mark the major eras within, and are flooded double spreads of metallic ink overprinted with stunning black and white imagery.
